Chapter 27 · "Ask, ask" · Verses 1–

The king, thinking her a friend, said lovingly: Beloved, your wish is fulfilled. There is joy in every house of the city. Tomorrow I give the post of heir to Rāma, so set the lucky things in order, my fair-eyed one. Hearing it, her hard heart shook, as if a boil had been touched. She hid even such pain with a smile, like a thief-woman who does not cry out. The king did not see the trick of her mind, taught by a crooked guide. Though the king is wise in policy, women's ways are a deep sea. Again she spread a false love and spoke with a smile, her eyes turned away. Ask, ask, you say, but you never give and never take; you promised two boons, and even now you doubt.

Then the king, knowing her his friend, said in a gentle, lovely voice, thrilled with love: 'Lady, your wish has come true. In every house in the city there is joy and festival.

Tomorrow I am giving the post of heir to Rāma. Fair-eyed one, set out the lucky things.' Hearing it, her hard heart shook, as if the doctor had touched a boil.

Even such pain she hid with a laugh, as a thief-woman does not cry out in the open. The king did not see the cunning trick, taught by a crooked guide in crores of tricks.

Verse 4

Though the king is skilled in policy, the ways of a woman are an unfathomable ocean. Again she spread a false love, and spoke with a smile, turning her eyes and face away.
