Chapter 266·Bharata bows and begins·Verses 1–
Bṛhaspati tells the gods that service of Sītā's husband is better than a hundred wish-cows, and now devotion like Bharata's has come to their side. Rāma is helpless before Bharata's simple nature, so they should steady their minds and see Bharata as Rāma's shadow. Rāma, who knows every heart, feels hesitation at the gods' and the guru's worry. Bharata feels the burden of the choice on his own head and turns it over in his heart. He decides that Rāma's command is his own good, and that Rāma gave up his own vow to keep Bharata's. Having shown such great kindness, Rāma sits there, and Bharata bows and speaks with folded hands.
