Chapter 262 · Bharata's grief · Verses 1–

Bharata says the king died keeping his vow of love, and the whole world knows his mother's bad judgment. He cannot bear to look at the grieving queens, and the people of the city burn with fever. He knows that he is the root of all the trouble, and that he has borne it. Rāma went to the forest barefoot in a sage's dress with Lakṣmaṇa and Sītā, yet Bharata still lives. Even the love of the Niṣāda did not break his hard heart. Those at whom a snake or scorpion drops its poison seemed enemies to his mother; fate is making him bear unbearable pain because of her.

The king died keeping the vow of his love; my mother's bad judgment, the whole world is witness. I cannot bear to look at my grieving mothers, and the men and women of the city burn with an unbearable fever.

I am the root of all this wrong. Hearing it and knowing it, I bore every pang. I heard that Raghunātha had gone to the forest in a sage's dress with Lakṣmaṇa and Sītā.

Without sandals, on foot, and I lived through that blow, with Śaṅkara as my witness. Then I saw the Niṣāda's love, and my heart, harder than a thunderbolt, did not break.

Verse 4

Now I have come and seen everything with my own eyes; this dull life lives on and bears it all. Those at the sight of whom snakes and scorpions on the road give up their fierce poison and sharp anger,

those very ones, Raghunandana, Lakṣmaṇa and Sītā, seemed enemies to her. Whom will fate make bear unbearable pain, if not the son of such a mother?
