Chapter 261·Bharata speaks in the assembly·Verses 1–
Bharata speaks before the sages, the guru and Rāma. He says fate could not bear to see him loved and struck him through his mother. He says that praising himself would not suit him, and that a good mother and a good son cannot be judged by one's own opinion. He does not blame anyone, not even in a dream; he blames his own ill luck and the ripening of his own old deeds. After searching his heart everywhere he finds one thing that is good for him: the guru, the master, Sītā and Rāma. He ends by saying that Rāma and the sages know whether his love is true or a trick.

Fate could not bear my being loved, and struck at me from below, through my mother's pretext. Even to say this does not suit me today; who ever became good and pure just by his own opinion?

'My mother is bad and I am good' — to hold such a thought in the heart is the worst conduct of all. Can coarse kodo grain grow into fine rice? Can a black oyster give birth to pearls?

There is not the smallest fault in anyone, even in a dream; my ill luck is a fathomless sea. I did not understand how my own sins were ripening, and I burned my mother with harsh words for nothing.

I searched my heart on every side and was beaten. In one way alone is my good truly good: my guru, my lord, my master, Sītā and Rāma — with them the end seems good to me.

In the assembly of the holy, near my guru and my lord, I speak the truth in a holy place. Whether my love is a trick or true, the sages and the king of the Raghus know.
