Chapter 259 · Rāma praises Bharata · Verses 1–

Seeing the teacher's love for Bharata, Rāma feels special joy in his heart. Knowing Bharata as a bearer of dharma and his own servant in body, mind and speech, he speaks gentle words, lovely and favourable to the teacher's order: 'Lord, on my oath and my father's feet, no brother like Bharata has been born on earth. Those who love the teacher's lotus feet are fortunate in the world and the Veda. You have such love for him; who can tell Bharata's fortune?' Seeing Bharata as a younger brother, Rāma's mind shrinks at praising him to his face. 'Doing what Bharata says would be good,' he says, and holds back. Then the sage says to Bharata: 'Dear one, drop all shyness; say what is in your heart to your dear brother, the ocean of mercy.'
