Chapter 248·The rites are done; Rāma asks the teacher·Verses 1–
Rāma performs his father's rites as the Veda describes, and becomes pure, he who is himself the sun to the darkness of sin, whose name is fire to the cotton of sin and whose remembrance is the root of all good. He became pure as the saints hold, like calling holy places into the Gaṅgā. Two days pass after the purification, and Rāma lovingly says to the teacher: 'Lord, the people are very distressed, living on roots, fruit and water. Seeing Bharata with his brother, the ministers and all the mothers, each moment seems an age to me. Go to the city with everyone, for you are here while the king is in Amarāvatī. I have said much and been bold; do as is fit, Lord.' Why would Rāma, the bridge of dharma and abode of mercy, not say so? The people are in pain; let them find rest after seeing him for a day or two.

He became pure in a way the saints approve, like calling holy places into the Gaṅgā. When two days had passed after the purification, Rāma said lovingly to the teacher:
Explanation
The point is that Rāma, who purifies all, needed no purification; he did the rite only as the custom demands, as one might invite holy waters into the Gaṅgā.
Verse 3
