Chapter 207 · Love for Rāma, root of all good · Verses 1–

Bharadvāja says that no one can call even this a good thing to say of Bharata, since the world, the Vedas and the wise all agree that the son to whom the father gives the kingdom gets it. The truthful king called Bharata and offered him the kingdom, with happiness and honour. Rāma's going to the forest is the root of all sorrow, and the foolish queen, driven by fate, did a wicked thing and repented at the end. Anyone who blames Bharata even a little is base and ignorant. Had he ruled, Rāma would have been glad to hear it. Now he has done very well: love for the feet of Raghubar is the root of all blessing in the world.

No one will call even this a good thing to say of you; the world, the Vedas and the wise all agree on both points. Dear one, singing your spotless fame, even the world and the Veda will win glory.

Verse 2

The world and the Vedas agree on this: whoever the father gives the kingdom to, he gets it. The truthful king called you and was giving you the kingdom, with happiness, duty and honour.

Verse 3

Rāma's going to the forest is the root of all harm, hearing which the whole world was pained. It was the work of fate on the ignorant queen, who played a wicked trick and repented in the end.

Verse 4

taham̐um̐ tumhāra alapa aparādhū kahai so adhama ayāna asādhū | karatehu rāju ta tumhahi na doṣū rāmahi hota sunata saṃtoṣū ||

Even there, whoever says your fault is slight is base, ignorant and wicked. Had you ruled, no blame would be on you, and Rāma would have been pleased to hear it.

Now you have done very well, Bharata; this decision is right for you. In the world, love for the feet of Raghubar is the root of all blessing.
