Chapter Two · The king's wish · Verses 1–

One day the king sat in his court with all his people. Every king served him gladly, and the guardians of the world kept their eyes on his wishes. Daśaratha was glad to hear Rāma's fame. He took up a mirror and looked at his face, and set his crown straight. White hair showed by his ears, as if old age were teaching him: give Rāma the post of heir, and gain the fruit of your life. With this thought in his heart, and joy in his body, he chose a good day and told his guru.

All the kings lived hoping for his favour, and the guardians of the world acted with love, watching his face. In the three worlds and the three times there was no one as fortunate as Daśaratha.

He whose son is Rāma, the root of all blessing: whatever is said of him is too little. The king took a mirror in his hand and looked at his face, and set his crown straight.

White hair had come close to his ears, as if old age were giving this teaching: O king, give Rāma the post of heir. Why do you not take the gain of your life and birth?

Bringing this thought into his heart, the king found a good day and a good moment. His body thrilled with love and his mind was glad, and he went and told it to his guru.
