Chapter 199·The bed of kuśa grass·Verses 1–
Seeing the lovely bed of kuśa grass, Bharata walks round it and bows. He puts the dust of the footprints to his eyes. Finding two or four gold specks, he takes them as Sītā's and keeps them on his head. With tears in his eyes and pain in his heart he speaks to his friend: Sītā, daughter of Janaka and wife of Rāma, has lost her glow in separation, like Ayodhyā's people. Her father, her father-in-law of the sun's line and her lord Rāma are all so great, and yet she lies on this bed. His heart does not split, harder than a thunderbolt.

Seeing the lovely bed of kuśa grass, he walked round it and bowed. He put the dust of the footprints to his eyes; the love of it cannot be told.

He saw two or four specks of gold and kept them on his head, counting them as Sītā's. With tears in his eyes and pain at heart he spoke good words to his friend:
Verse 3

'Sītā has lost her glow and her beauty in separation, like all the men and women of Ayodhyā. Her father is Janaka; to whom can I compare him? Every worldly enjoyment lay in his hand, yet he was a yogī.
Verse 4

Her father-in-law is the king, the sun of the solar line, whom even the lord of Amarāvatī envies. Her lord, her life, is Rāma. Whatever is great is great through Rāma's greatness.'

That Sītā, the jewel among devoted wives, who counts her husband as her god, lay on this bed of grass. Seeing it, my heart does not split with grief; it is harder than the thunderbolt of Śiva.
