The men and women of the city, like cakravāka pairs waiting for day, wait for dawn with heavy hearts. They stay awake all night, and morning comes. Bharata calls the wise ministers and says to take all the coronation materials: he will give the kingdom to Rāma in the forest, in the sage's presence. Hearing it, the ministers salute and quickly make ready horses, chariots and elephants. Vasiṣṭha with Arundhatī and the sacred fires goes first by chariot, and Brahmins, treasuries of penance and brightness, follow in many vehicles. The townspeople prepare their vehicles and set out for Citrakūṭa. The lovely palanquins cannot be described, and all the queens mount and set out. Entrusting the city to pure servants and sending everyone off with honour, the two brothers leave, remembering the feet of Rāma and Sītā.
