Chapter 119·The people blame fate·Verses 1–
The returning men and women are full of regret, blaming fate in their minds, and say to each other with sorrow that fate's doings are all upside down. It is quite unchecked, hard and fearless; it made the moon sick and spotted, the wishing-tree dry, the sea salty, and it is that same fate that sent these princes to the forest. If fate gave them the forest, it made pleasures and luxuries in vain. They walk the road without shoes; in vain has fate made carriages of many kinds. They lie on the ground on kuśa grass and leaves; why does fate make lovely beds? Fate gave them the trees' shade to live in, and in vain built white palaces with labour. The dohā: if these two put on hermits' bark and matted hair, though so lovely and tender, fate made the many kinds of ornaments and clothes in vain.

They lie on the ground on kuśa and leaves; why does fate make lovely beds? It gave them a home under the best trees; in vain it laboured to build white palaces.

If these two, so beautiful and so tender, wear hermit's bark and matted hair, then fate made ornaments and clothes of many kinds in vain.
