Chapter 101·The boatman washes the Lord's feet·Verses 1–
The Lord of mercy smiled and said: do whatever keeps your boat from going; quickly fetch water and wash my feet; delay is the delay of crossing. Whose name, said once, takes men across the endless sea of rebirth, that same kind Lord begged the boatman, he who made the whole world smaller than his three steps. Seeing the Lord's toe-nail, the river of the gods was glad; hearing his words, her mind was drawn to him. The boatman took Rāma's leave and brought a wooden bowl of water. Filled with love, he began to wash the lotus feet, and the gods rained flowers; no one is so full of merit as this. The dohā: washing the feet, he drank the water with his family, gave his forefathers the crossing, and then joyfully carried the Lord over.
