Chapter 46·The saints' virtues, and the end of the sopāna·Verses 1–
A saint is shy to hear his own virtues and glad to hear another's. He is even, cool, keeps to right conduct, simple, and friendly to all. He keeps to prayer, austerity, vows, self-control and rules, and loves the feet of teacher, Govinda and brahmins. He has faith, patience, friendship, kindness, joy, and a plain love for Rāma's feet. He has detachment, discernment, humility and knowledge, and he understands the Vedas and Purāṇas rightly. He is never vain or proud and never sets foot on the wrong path, even by mistake. He always sings and hears the Lord's deeds, and does good for others without a reason. Not even Sarasvatī, Śeṣa or the Vedas can tell all the virtues of saints. Nārada bows many times and goes to Brahmā's world. Blessed, says Tulsīdās, are those who give up hope and take Hari's colour. Whoever sings or hears the pure fame of Rāvaṇa's enemy wins firm devotion, without needing detachment, prayer or yoga. The flame of a lamp is the body of a young woman: mind, do not be a moth to it. Worship Rāma, give up lust and pride, and keep the company of the good.

They always sing and hear my deeds, and do good to others without a cause, as their habit. Sage, hear as many virtues as the good have; Sarasvatī and the Vedas cannot tell them all.

Sarasvatī, Śeṣa and Nārada could not tell them; he heard it and held the Lord's feet, for the friend of the poor, the kind, had told the virtues of his own devotees with his own mouth. Bowing his head again and again at his feet, Nārada went to Brahmā's world. Blessed, says Tulsīdās, are those who give up hope and take on the colour of Hari.
