Rāvaṇa thinks: no god, man, demon, serpent or bird can match his servants, and Khara and Dūṣaṇa were as strong as himself. Only the Lord could have killed them. If the Lord has been born to ease the earth's burden, then he will fight him, and dying by his arrow he will cross the world. A body of the lower kind cannot worship, but this mantra is firm in mind, word and deed: if they are only princes, he will win them in battle and carry off the woman. He rides alone in a chariot to Mārīca by the seashore. Meanwhile Rāma plans something, and tells Umā that story. When Lakṣmaṇa went into the forest for roots and fruit, Rāma smiled and spoke to Jānakī.रावण सोचता है कि देवता, मनुष्य, असुर, नाग और पक्षियों में कोई उसके सेवक के बराबर नहीं, खर-दूषण उसके समान बलवान थे; उन्हें भगवान के सिवा कौन मारता। यदि भगवान ने पृथ्वी का भार उतारने के लिए अवतार लिया है, तो मैं हठ से बैर करूँगा और प्रभु के बाण से प्राण छोड़कर भव तर जाऊँगा। तामस शरीर से भजन नहीं होगा, पर यह मन, कर्म और वचन का दृढ़ मंत्र है। यदि कोई नर रूप राजकुमार हैं, तो दोनों को रण में जीतकर उनकी स्त्री हर लूँगा। यह निश्चय करके वह अकेला रथ पर चढ़कर वहाँ चला जहाँ समुद्र के तट पर मारीच रहता था। यहाँ राम ने जो उपाय बनाया वह सुहावनी कथा, हे उमा, सुनो। जब लक्ष्मण मूल, फल और कन्द लेने वन गए, तब कृपा के सुख-समूह राम ने जनकसुता से हँसकर कहा।

If the Lord has taken birth to delight the gods and break the burden of the earth, then I will go and make enmity by force. By the Lord's arrow I will give up my life and cross the world.
