Chapter One · The crow and the arrow · Verses 1–

Tulsīdās says he has sung of Bharata's love, and now turns to the deeds of the Lord in the forest. One day Rāma made ornaments out of flowers with his own hands and put them on Sītā, as they sat on a crystal rock. Then Indra's foolish son took the shape of a crow, to test Rāma's strength. He pecked Sītā's foot and flew off. Rāma saw the blood flow and fixed a reed-arrow to his bow.

I have sung, as far as my mind could reach, the lovely and matchless love of the people of the city and of Bharata. Now hear, most pure, the Lord's deeds in the forest, which please the gods, men and sages.

Verse 2

Once Rāma picked flowers and made ornaments with his own hands. He put them on Sītā with great care. Then he sat down on a lovely crystal rock.

Indra's son took the shape of a crow. The fool wanted to see the Lord's strength, like an ant trying to measure the sea. In his deep stupidity he wished to know the unknowable.

Explanation

Indra's son is Jayanta.

He struck Sītā's foot with his beak and fled. The dull fool had a reason: he was a crow. Blood began to flow. Rāma saw it, and set a reed-arrow to his bow.

Rāma is always very kind and loving to the poor. Yet the fool, a house of faults, came and played a trick on him.
