The subject: Navratri for an undiksha, working householder
A nine-day Navratri plan for a sadhak who holds no diksha and cannot take leave from work
The speaker says he will set out which mantras of Bhagavati an ordinary sadhak who has received no diksha of any kind should jap over the nine days, and what vidhan to keep, so that the tantrokta — that is, the most intense — effect of the mantra reaches him, Jagadamba's kripa is obtained and his work is accomplished. The Durga Saptashati paths are included, and the whole scheme is built for people who are working and cannot get leave.
A first Navratri in the new samvatsar, and Pratipada ghat sthapana
Can someone keep Navratri for the very first time, and when is the kalash established?
In the new samvatsar that is beginning, every person may do Navratri, including anyone doing it for the first time. Kalash sthapana is done on the day of Pratipada in a shubh muhurat; one may follow the timing given by knowledgeable brahmins and scholars of one's own region.
Guru-Ganpati pujan, svastivachan and the sankalp
Guru and Ganpati pujan, then svastivachan, before the sankalp on the first morning
On the first day, at the time of pujan in the morning, sit at your place and take the sankalp. Guru and Ganpati pujan comes first; after svastivachan the sankalp is taken. If svastivachan is not known, take Bhagwan Narayan's name three times, take Ganpati ji's name, do Ganpati ji's path, and then with water, akshat and flowers in the hand take the sankalp of doing the nine-day Navratri vrat.
Saptashati path by day, tithi-wise Durga mantra japa by night
Two limbs carried together: the Saptashati path by day, the tithi-wise Durga mantra by night
Two things are carried together. The first is doing the path of the Shri Durga Saptashati. The second is, in the night hours, japping the mantra of that swarup of Bhagavati Mahadurga which belongs to the tithi of that day, and obtaining her kripa.
Now, as to how you are to do it: two things have to be carried along, the speaker says. The first thing is to do the path of the Shri Durga Saptashati. The second thing is that in the night hours, according to whichever tithi it is, whichever swarup of Bhagavati Mahadurga stands for that day, to jap the mantra of that Durga swarup and obtain her kripa.
Rakta chandan, rudraksha or sphatik mala and its chetan-yukt consecration
Which mala should be used for Navratri japa, and does it need pran pratishtha?
A rakta chandan mala or a rudraksha mala — either of the two — may be used for the japa, and a sphatik mala may be used as well. Have the mala made pran-pratishthit and chetan-yukt; the vidhan is on the channel. It may also be done on the Amavasya tithi, the Somvati Amavasya that is falling, a divya kaal, if it has not been consecrated yet.
The Mahavidya krama — the Saptashati split across the nine tithis
Is the whole Durga Saptashati read every day?
No — the complete Saptashati path is not to be done daily. It is done in the Mahavidya krama, whose full vidhi has been given separately on the channel. He says he will describe here how the nine days are to be done all together.
Now the first point, the speaker says: we are not to do the complete Saptashati path every day. We will do it in the Mahavidya krama. The full vidhi of the Mahavidya krama has been given separately on the channel, and listeners may watch that too and become clearer. Today as well he will describe how the nine days are to be done, one after another, all together.
Ghat sthapana, a fixed time for aarti, then the path
The ghat sthapana takes the first day, with the aarti time then fixed morning and evening
On the first day some time will go simply in doing the ghat sthapana. After that there must be a morning and evening aarti. If the family is going to join the aarti, fix a definite time and do the aarti then; your own path is to be done after that.
Morning path, evening or night japa; red, yellow or orange cloth, kusha asana, east or north
Path in the morning, japa at night or sandhya; red, yellow or orange cloth on a kusha asana
The path in the Mahavidya krama is done in the morning, and Bhagavati's mantras are japped in the night hours or at sandhya. Make a full effort to wear red cloth or yellow — it should be coloured, so wear red, yellow or orange. The asana should be of kusha, red or yellow, red being best. The direction should be east or north.
Ganpati, Bhairav, Hanuman and Narsingh; and Datt as mahaguru
Which deities are worshipped alongside Bhagavati during the Navratri vrat?
Along with Bhagavati, pujan has to be done of Ganpati ji, Bhairav ji, Hanuman ji and Bhagwan Narsingh — all four. If you merely offer akshat and flowers in the names of all four, your puja is accepted, so you should not think too much about it. If the vidhan is known to you, that is better; otherwise only this much.
No utkeelan or Mrityu Sanjeevani needed; kavach, argala, keelak, adhyaya one, then the Tantrokta Devi Suktam
No utkeelan or Mrityu Sanjeevani in this krama — kavach, argala, keelak, adhyaya one, then the Devi Suktam
When the pujan and path are done in the Mahavidya krama, there is no need to perform the utkeelan and the Mrityu Sanjeevani or sanjeevan krama; he says he has explained this separately in that video and given the proofs. You have only to read the kavach, argala and keelak, and on the first day the first adhyaya; after the first adhyaya you then read the Tantrokta Devi Suktam.
After that you will begin the path of the Shri Durga Saptashati, the speaker says. In the Saptashati path, when the pujan and the path are done in the Mahavidya krama, there is no need in it to perform the utkeelan and the Mrityu Sanjeevani, the sanjeevan krama, and all of those. He has explained this separately in that video and has given the proofs for it there as well. You have only to do the path of the kavach, the argala and the keelak, and on the first day the path of the first adhyaya. After doing the path of the first adhyaya, you will then do the path of the Tantrokta Devisuktam.
Samput with one mala before and after, or at least nine repetitions, without pranav
How is the Navarna mantra used with a Durga Saptashati path, and how many times?
If you do Navarna and the like, make a samput with one mala each — one mala before the first adhyaya and one mala after. If you do not do that, then do the Navarna at least nine times. Do it without the pranav. For japa and siddhi beyond this measure, he says, you should take diksha and then do it.
Reading the whole Saptashati in Hindi with bhav rather than reciting Sanskrit wrongly
Can the Durga Saptashati be read in Hindi if Sanskrit pronunciation is not known?
Those who do not know how to do the path in Sanskrit should please not do a wrong path. Do the complete path in Hindi, with bhav. There is no trouble in it — however much anyone may say that nothing happens by doing it in Hindi, and that "Maa is hungry for bhav" — both these subjects come up, and you are not to worry.
Here, the speaker says, those who do not know how to do the path in Sanskrit should please not do a wrong path. Do the complete path in Hindi, with bhav. There is no trouble in it. However much anyone may say that doing it in Hindi achieves nothing, and that Maa is hungry only for bhav — both of these subjects do come up, and you are not to be anxious about it. If you are doing it for the first time, begin in Hindi.
Learning Sanskrit over a few Navratris — 700 shlokas at ten a day
Ten shlokas a day across a few Navratris covers all seven hundred
He is not saying that one should read in Hindi for the rest of one's life. Over two or three, four or five Navratris Sanskrit will slowly begin to come; give half an hour or fifteen minutes and you will learn in six months. There are only 700 shlokas — ten a day and you will learn it in two months and ten days. Only the pronunciation has to be learned; it does not have to be committed to memory.
Eight o'clock, a karma sakshi deepak, and the Shailputri mantra
Around eight, with a karma sakshi lamp, on the Shailputri mantra
On the night of Pratipada, or at sandhya once the aarti is done with the family or alone, you may jap earlier; otherwise around eight o'clock sit again on your asana. The akhand jyot is burning; kindle a separate karma sakshi deepak, offer dhoop, deep and naivedya, offer akshat and flowers in the names of guru, Ganpati, Batuk Bhairav and Bhagwan Narsingh, and then jap the mantra of Bhagavati's first swarup, Shailputri Durga.
On the night of Pratipada, or at the time of sandhya once the aarti and the rest have been done with the family or alone, japa may also be done earlier, the speaker says. Otherwise, at around eight o'clock, sit again upon your asana. The Akhand Jyot is burning; kindle one karma sakshi deepak separately as well, and offer dhoop, deep, naivedya and the rest. You will offer akshat, flowers and so on in the names of the guru, Ganpati, Batuk Bhairav ji and Bhagwan Narsingh, and after that the mantra of Bhagavati's first swarup, Shailputri Durga. The PDF for this will be placed in the description of the video — which mantras are to be japped on each of the nine days of Navratri in the night hours: on the day of Pratipada whose, and on the second day what the mantra of Brahmacharini will be. Nine malas of each are to be japped.
Nine malas offered to Bhagavati, and nine cloves and camphors burnt
Nine malas offered up to Bhagavati, and nine cloves with camphor burnt to close
Nine malas of the first Durga swarup are japped at night and offered up to Bhagavati. That is all that has to be done. If you wish, kindle nine camphors and nine cloves in some vessel. The first day's pujan is then complete — very little time will be spent, the time will be entirely authentic, and Bhagavati's complete kripa will be obtained.
The first mantra of Shailputri Durga — the first swarup of Bhagavati Durga ji — is japped nine malas at night and then offered up to Bhagavati, the speaker says. That much only is to be done by you. If you wish, kindle nine camphors and nine cloves in some vessel. Your pujan of the first day is complete. Very little time will be taken, the time will be altogether authentic, and Bhagavati's complete kripa will be obtained.
Adhyayas two and three, four, and five to eight; Brahmacharini, Chandraghanta and Kushmanda
Adhyayas two and three, then four, then five to eight — Brahmacharini, Chandraghanta, Kushmanda
On the second tithi: kavach, argala and keelak again, the second and third adhyayas of the Durga Saptashati, and the Tantrokta Devi Suktam, with nine malas of Bhagavati Brahmacharini at night. On Tritiya: kavach, argala, keelak, the fourth adhyaya and the Tantrokta Devi Suktam by day, and nine malas of Bhagavati Chandraghanta at night. On Chaturthi: kavach, argala, keelak, the fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth adhyayas, the Tantrokta Devi Suktam, and nine malas of Bhagavati Kushmanda's mantra at night.
On the second tithi you will again do the path of the kavach, argala and keelak, the path of the second and third adhyayas of the Durga Saptashati, and the path of the Tantrokta Devisuktam, the speaker says. And in the night hours you will do nine malas of Bhagavati Brahmacharini. Her mantra too will be found in the PDF in the description; all of them, for the nine Durgas, will be together in one place. On the Tritiya tithi you do the kavach, argala and keelak, the fourth adhyaya and the Tantrokta Devi Suktam by day; at night you do nine malas of Bhagavati Chandraghanta. On the Chaturthi tithi: the kavach, argala and keelak, the path of the fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth adhyayas, the Tantrokta Devi Suktam, and in the night hours nine malas of the mantra of Bhagavati Kushmanda.
Adhyayas nine and ten, then eleven; Skandmata and Katyayani
Adhyayas nine and ten, then eleven — Skandmata and Katyayani at night
On the Panchami tithi read the ninth and tenth adhyayas along with the kavach, argala and keelak, and jap the mantras of Skanda Mata in the night hours. On the Shashthi tithi the eleventh adhyaya, with the kavach, argala and keelak and the Tantrokta Devi Suktam. The kavach, argala and keelak are done every single day, and the Tantrokta Devi Suktam — the stuti beginning "Ya Devi Sarvabhuteshu" — follows the adhyayas. At night on Shashthi, nine malas of Bhagavati Katyayani.
On the Panchami tithi, do the path of the ninth and tenth adhyayas along with the kavach, argala and keelak, the speaker says, and in the night hours jap the mantras of Skanda Mata. On the Shashthi tithi it will be the eleventh adhyaya, along with the kavach, argala and keelak and the Tantrokta Devisuktam. This will be daily: the kavach, argala and keelak will be done every day. Do the path of the adhyayas that belong to the Mahavidya krama, and after that read the Tantrokta Devi Suktam — the stuti that runs "Ya Devi Sarvabhuteshu". And in the night hours on the Shashthi tithi, nine malas of Bhagavati Katyayani will be done.
Adhyayas twelve and thirteen, then the three Rahasyas; Kalratri and Mahagauri
Adhyayas twelve and thirteen, then the three Rahasyas — Kalratri and Mahagauri
On the Saptami tithi read the twelfth and thirteenth adhyayas with the kavach, argala and keelak, read the Devi Suktam, and jap nine malas of Bhagavati Kalratri at night. The thirteen adhyayas are then complete, so on the Ashtami tithi you read the three Rahasyas along with the kavach, argala and keelak — the three Rahasyas, Murti Rahasya and the rest, given after the thirteen adhyayas and the Tantrokta Devi Suktam — and jap the mantras of Mahagauri at night.
On the Saptami tithi you will do the path of the twelfth and thirteenth adhyayas along with the kavach, argala and keelak, the speaker says. You will do the path of the Devi Suktam, and in the night hours you will jap nine malas of Bhagavati Kalratri. Now your thirteen adhyayas stand complete, so on the Ashtami tithi you will do the path of the three Rahasyas along with the kavach, argala and keelak. The three Rahasyas are those given after the thirteen adhyayas and the Tantrokta Devisuktam — the Murti Rahasya and the others. Do the path of these three Rahasyas, and after that, in the night hours, you will jap the mantras of Mahagauri.
Havan and kanya pujan on the Navami morning; paran on Dashami
Havan early on Navami because the kanya pujan follows, with the paran left to Dashami
On the Navami tithi the havan is done early in the morning, because the kanya pujan has to be done. Do Bhagavati's havan in the morning and do the kanya pujan; there is no difficulty and it is complete there. But note that you are not to take the paran yet. On the Navami night jap nine malas of Bhagavati Siddhidatri's mantra, and on the Dashami tithi take the paran.
Both Mahagauri and Siddhidatri japped on Ashtami night, with ahutis on Navami morning
Mahagauri and Siddhidatri both japped on Ashtami night, the ahutis given Navami morning
If a doubt remains in the mind about how this can be, there is a second road. On the Ashtami night, after japping the nine malas of Mahagauri, jap nine malas of Bhagavati Siddhidatri as well, at the same sitting. Then on the Navami morning offer at least twenty-seven ahutis into the fire with the mantras of each of the nine Durgas.
If a doubt is in your mind — that no, how can it be so, how will it be done — then there is no difficulty in that either, the speaker says. There is a second road for you. On the Ashtami tithi itself, in the night hours, when you jap the nine malas of Mahagauri, after that jap nine malas of Bhagavati Siddhidatri as well, at one and the same time. On the Ashtami night you have japped both of them. Then on the Navami tithi, in the morning, with the mantras of each one of the nine Durgas, offer at least twenty-seven ahutis each into the fire.
Guggul for a woman, ghee for a man; the Vedokta prohibition and the tantrokta permission
May a woman offer ahuti, and with what substance?
If you are a woman, offer with guggul; if a man, offer with ghee. Asked whether a woman may offer ahuti at all, the speaker answers that in the Vedic vidhan she should not, and in the Vedokta vidhan it is not done — other people, he remarks, have become very clever these days. But this, he says, is the tantrokta vidhan, this is Jagadamba's vidhan, and in it a woman may make ordinary ahuti with no difficulty.
The last twenty minutes of Ashtami and the first twenty of Navami, and Chamunda's appearance
What is the sandhi kaal between Ashtami and Navami?
The final twenty minutes of Ashtami and the opening twenty minutes of Navami are called the sandhi kaal. It is in this that Bhagavati's foremost swarup, called Jagadamba's Chamunda swarup — which he calls the greatest tantrokta form of the greatest Jagadamba — appeared. The pujan of this swarup should therefore be done at this time. Whether to take the paran on Navami is left to the listener's own judgement.
Deepdaan and bali; a minimum of one coconut and three lemons
Where the full vidhi is beyond reach: deepdaan, and at least a coconut and three lemons
There is a separate video on how deepdaan is to be done, how bali is to be given, to whom bali is to be given and to whom it is not; the speaker asks listeners to see that too and to do it if possible. If you will not be able to do so large a vidhi, then at the very least give a bali of one coconut and three lemons, and burn camphor, cloves and the like.
There is a separate video, the speaker says, on how deepdaan is to be done, how Bali is to be given, to whom bali is to be given and to whom it is not — the whole subject is there, and he asks listeners to watch that as well. If it is possible, do that too. If you will not be able to perform so large a vidhi, then at the very least give a bali of one coconut and three lemons, without fail. Burn camphor, cloves and the like.
Daan of anna and dakshina, and samarpan of the whole vrat to Jagadamba
Anna and dakshina given in daan, and the whole vrat offered up to Jagadamba
After all this, before you take the paran on the last day, some anna and the like has to be given in daan, and dakshina given, with a sankalp; and at the end there is samarpan — that we offer to Jagadamba the whole Navratri vrat we have kept. Only after that should the paran be taken.
