Why is Dattatreya said to grant this diksha even without a living guru?
The pujan of Bhagwan Dattatreya is here completed according to vidhi and capacity, and the speaker says it should be done with full bhav. He calls this quality smarangamita: he has told repeatedly, he says, that Datta Bhagwan himself said to Danadan Muni that whoever remembers him, in whatever bhav, he becomes present immediately. So when you perform the pujan by this vidhi with such bhav, he says, Bhagwan will be present and will certainly grant you that diksha imperceptibly and accept you as his disciple.
Does the Dev Deeksha vidhan remove that prohibition?
In the rarest condition, where the situation is very bad, it is there for a kavach and the like: if you have done the Dev Deeksha vidhan too, and from the heart you have accepted, say, Bhagavan Dattatreya in the guru form, and have made yourself initiated by vidhi vidhan through the Dev Deeksha vidhan, then even so the dosha will not attach. That will pass. But if you have not done it at all, then leave it, and look at another one.
Repetition makes a falsehood feel true, which is why reference must be taken from the shastras
Because, he says, when you see a negative thing again and again, however much a lie the man is telling, on hearing it again and again it begins to feel true to you. That is why one says: take reference of the shastras. Who knows, he says, perhaps we too are sitting and telling lies — so read the shastras, read the Puranas; do svadhyaya. Do not accept me, but listen to what I say and accept that.
