Svadha Stotram — Brahmā's hymn to Svadhā, goddess of the offering to the ancestors

The word svadhā is what is said when food and water are offered to the ancestors. Here the word is a goddess. Brahmā calls her out of his own mind to please the Pitr, tells her who she is, and she appears. The hymn is recited at Shraddha and through the fortnight of the ancestors.

ब्रह्मोवाच — ब्रह्मा बोले Brahmā said

स्वधोच्चारणमात्रेण तीर्थस्नायी भवेन्नरः ।
मुच्यते सर्वपापेभ्यो वाजपेयफलं लभेत् ॥ १ ॥

"स्वधा" शब्द बोलने भर से मनुष्य तीर्थों में स्नान किए हुए जैसा हो जाता है। वह सब पापों से छूट जाता है और वाजपेय यज्ञ का फल पाता है।

English sense

By merely saying "svadhā", a person becomes one who has bathed in the holy places. He is freed from all sins and gains the fruit of the Vājapeya sacrifice.

English sense

If a person remembers "svadhā, svadhā, svadhā" three times, he gets the fruit of the śrāddha, and of the offering of the right time and the water offering.

जो श्राद्ध के समय स्थिर मन से यह स्वधा-स्तोत्र सुनता है, उसे सौ श्राद्धों का पुण्य मिलता है। इसमें कोई सन्देह नहीं।

English sense

Whoever listens to this Svadhā hymn with a steady mind at the time of śrāddha gains the merit of a hundred śrāddhas. There is no doubt of it.

English sense

Faithful one, you are of the nature of both the lasting and the passing, and you take the form of the qualities. Your appearing is at creation, your vanishing at dissolution.

Long ago, in Goloka, you were the cowherd girl Svadhā, a friend of Rādhikā. You were held to the chest as his own self, and so you came to be remembered as Svadhā.
