Govindashtakam — The cowherd boy who is also the highest truth

Almost every line sets a small story beside a large claim. The child who crawls in the cow-yard is also the one with no form and no lord. The boy who took the bathing women's clothes is also the one who abides in the mind. Each verse closes on the same words, praṇamata govindaṃ paramānandam, bow to Govinda, the highest bliss, and Krishna is named in the last.

English sense

Bow to Govinda, the highest bliss. He is truth, knowledge, endless and eternal; he is not space, yet he is the highest space. He loves to crawl in the yard of the cow-pen; he is effortless, and yet he strives the hardest. Māyā has shaped his many forms, yet he has no form, and the worlds are his form. He is the lord of Earth and of Lakṣmī, and he himself has no lord.

English sense

English sense

English sense

Bow to Govinda, the highest bliss. He is the Gopāla, the cowherd, whose body is the Lord's play, the cowherd of his own clan. He is pleased by the games of the gopīs and by holding up Govardhana. The cows spoke his clear name, Govinda, and he has many other names. He walks the road where the gopīs can see him.

English sense

Bow to Govinda, the highest bliss. In the circle of the gopīs and the cowherd company he makes differences, yet in every difference his glow is one. He always wears the shining good fortune of the dust the cows' hooves shake up, which turns him grey. He takes his joy from faith and devotion; he is beyond thought, yet he is real in whoever thinks of him. His greatness is that of the wish-jewel.
