Damodarashtakam — Eight verses to the Lord bound by his mother

Yaśodā catches the child who has been at the butter and ties him to a heavy mortar with a rope. The hymn looks at that scene with love: the frightened eyes, the shaking necklace, the red lips. Then it asks for only one thing, the way the two sons of Kubera were freed from their tree shapes by the same child. It is traditionally sung in the month of Kārttika.

English sense

I bow to the Lord whose form is being, knowing and joy. His earrings sway and he shines in Gokula. Out of fear of Yaśodā he jumps down from the mortar and runs, but the cowherd woman runs fast and catches hold of him.

English sense
