Vaidik, tantrik and devi pranava: who may pronounce which
Three pranavas matched to adhikara
The speaker says there are three Pranav forms and one must chant according to one's adhikara. The vaidik pranava ॐ (Omkar, made of अ, उ and म) is for those who wear the Yajnopavita, with the Gayatri Mantra and the like. The tantrik pranava औं (the letter औ with the anusvara, औ plus half म) may be said by everyone who does not wear the yajnopavita and by women. The Devi Pranava ह्रीं may be said by every person. He warns that chanting a mantra without adhikara breaks the limits set by the shastras and brings harm, sometimes ruin, just as taking a 25 mg tablet when you need 10 mg makes you ill rather than cured faster.
Misconception: anyone may add the vaidik Om to the Panchakshari mantra
Benefit now, long harm later
The speaker says people who have never worn the Yajnopavita but, from YouTube and Facebook, insist they cannot do the Panchakshari Mantra without putting the vaidik pranava ॐ before it, are overstepping (atikraman). They will surely get benefit, he says, but in time it brings them long and great harm. The tantrik pranava औं and the Devi Pranava ह्रीं can be said by anyone, and those who wear the yajnopavita may use them too if they wish; but the vaidik ॐ is to be said only with adhikara. He says this is what scholars describe from the shastras, that the present Shankaracharya has also spoken of it, and that accepting it is the listener's choice.
Having set out the three pranavas — the vaidik ॐ for those who wear the YajnopavitaThe sacred thread ceremony marking initiation into Vedic rites (Janeu) — if lapsed across generations, expiation (Prayashchitta) for each known generation is required before it can be resumed., the tantrik औं for everyone else including women, and the Devi Pranava ह्रीं for all — the speaker turns to a common practice. Those who have never in their life worn the yajnopavita, and who, watching YouTube and Facebook, say they cannot do the Panchakshari Mantra without putting the pranava ॐ before and after it, are committing atikraman (overstepping). Because of this, he says, they will certainly get benefit, but over time they suffer long and great harm. The tantrik and devi pranavas can be uttered by anyone. Those who wear the yajnopavita may also say these if they wish; there is no problem. But the vaidik pranava should be uttered only by one who has the adhikara. He says he is only telling what scholars have described as written in the shastras, and that the present Shankaracharya Maharaj has also spoken about this. He puts the subject before his viewers, he says, so that those who accept it may do their japa according to the adhikara for these mantras; it is for their own good.
