Chandika Kopa: Mistakes That Invite the Goddess's Wrath in Durga Saptashati

Minor mistakes made during an initial, transitional phase — when a practitioner is distressed, ignorant, or just beginning — are met with the Goddess's guidance and grace, the same way ancient devotees are described receiving grace despite simple errors. But once correct knowledge has been made available through scriptures and other media, continuing to ignore it invites Chandika KopaDivine wrath.. An educated person with access to scripture is expected to correct their practice rather than intentionally persist in error under the guise of simplicity.

Bhakti (devotion) pertains to personal sentiment (Bhava) — if the intent is clean, the deity accepts the worship and offerings. Tantra Sadhana is different: whether Shakta, Shaiva, Aghora, or Vaishnava Tantra, explicit rules apply, and mantra chanting or PurashcharanaA ritualistic repetition of a mantra to prescribed rules — required in Tantra Sadhana. (ritualistic repetition) must strictly follow them. A person who wants the results of Tantra Sadhana — mantra perfection, divine blessings — while refusing its rules, and excusing that refusal as "just devotion," is engaging in self-deception.

For the Utkilana (un-locking) process during Durga Saptashati recitation, specific rules apply for Sanskrit pronunciation. Someone without accurate Sanskrit should practice and study the text rather than undertake a formal, vowed (Sankalpita) recitation. Someone who wants to worship purely through devotion, without precise Sanskrit knowledge, should recite the text in their native language (e.g. Hindi) rather than mispronouncing the Sanskrit — flouting the prescribed method or reciting incorrect mantras leads to unfavourable results.

Havan should not be performed directly using the verses of the durga-kavach, as this is said to destroy accomplishments (siddhi). Havan should also not be performed using the Kunjika Stotram — per scriptural authorities like the Meru Tantra, it is meant solely for recitation (Patha), not for fire offerings.

Offerings of Samagri/ShakalyaA standard herbal offering mix used in Havan. are strictly prohibited during the 'Uvacha"Said" — the narrative-verse marker (Rishi Uvacha, Devi Uvacha, etc.).' verses — Rishi Uvacha, Raja Uvacha, Devi Uvacha, Doota Uvacha. For these, the primary offerer presents ghee, while others offer fruits (such as banana), betel leaves, or honey. The same restriction applies to the four Rakshoghna Mantras in Chapter 4 ('Sauren Pahi No Devi...'), which describe weapons and protective barriers — these should either be recited without any offering, or offered honey or fruit instead of Shakalya.

For Kavach, offerings use the individual name mantras of the Navadurga (Shailaputri, Brahmacharini, etc.) or of the powers mentioned (Kaumari, Vaishnavi, etc.) — Havan is not performed using the Kavach's full verses. For Argala, Havan offers nine Ahutis using only the Argala Stotram's first mantra, not the entire text. For Kilaka, Havan uses only the first mantra, dedicated to Lord Shiva. For the Rahasya texts (Pradhanika, Vaikritika, Murti Rahasya), no Havan offerings are prescribed at all. For the Siddha Kunjika Stotram, Havan is strictly forbidden — it is for recitation only; specific Tantric traditions (Shakta Pramoda, Durga Kalpadruma) prescribe distinct seed-mantra offerings for specific Kalika mantras instead, which require explicit initiation and guidance.

Maintaining an Akhand Jyot (continuous lamp) has rules that must be followed — lighting a new lamp every 24 hours while letting the previous one extinguish daily is improper. Strict celibacy (BrahmacharyaStrict celibacy required through an extended ritual observance.) is required through the extended observance (AnushthanaAn extended ritual observance — such as 108 recitations of a scripture — carrying its own strict rules.). During seasonal festivals (Sharadiya Navaratri) or extended Saptashati Yagnas like Navachandi or Shatchandi, symbolic Bali offerings — Kushmanda (ash gourd), coconut, sugarcane, cucumber, or banana — are required upon completing set numbers of recitations, such as 9 or 100.

Offering symbolic non-animal substitutes — lemons, nutmeg, cloves, ash gourds, bottle gourds, cucumbers, bananas, or sugarcane — incurs no negative karma, penalty, or divine displeasure. In some traditions, women are restricted from breaking a whole coconut, since it symbolizes lineage (Vamsha); alternatives such as offering bananas, or burning cloves and camphor, or cutting fruits, are prescribed instead.
