Chapter Five·In Praise of the Bhagavatī Gītā·Verses 1–17
Chapter 19 of the Mahābhāgavata, the fifth and last chapter of the Pārvatī Gītā. Śiva tells Nārada how Himavān, hearing the essence of yoga from Pārvatī, became freed while alive. She then took her mother's milk as an ordinary child, in play. Himavān held a great festival, and on the tenth day, after worshipping Ṣaṣṭhī on the sixth, he named her Pārvatī. Śiva then names what comes to one who reads this Gītā. Freedom becomes easy, devotion to Pārvatī grows firm, and Śarvāṇī is pleased. One who reads it on the eighth, ninth and fourteenth days, on the Great Eighth of autumn with a fast and a night's watch, on a new-moon day, or at midnight near a bilva tree gains merit beyond count: the gods and guardians of the world obey him, his faults and enemies are destroyed, and he becomes like Durgā. Śiva closes by saying that nothing on earth equals reading it, and asks Nārada what more he wishes to hear.
