Īśvara tells the goddess the Durgā kavaca, which gives every siddhi: reciting and wearing it a man escapes danger, while one who repeats the Durgā mantra without knowing it gains no fruit and goes to hell. Eighteen forms of the goddess are set on the body — Umā on the head, Śūladhāriṇī on the forehead, Khecarī on the eyes, Catvaravāsinī on the ears, Sugandhā on the nostrils, Sarvasādhinī on the face, Caṇḍikā on the tongue, Saubhadrikā on the throat, Aśokavāsinī on the mind, Vajradhāriṇī on the arms, Mahāvāṇī on the neck, Jaganmātā on the breasts, Lalitā on the heart, Siṃhavāhinī on the belly, Bhagavatī on the hips, Vindhyavāsinī on the thighs, Mahābalā on the shanks and Bhūtalavāsinī on the feet — and Durgā, who protects the three worlds, is asked to guard every limb.
