सूर्यकवचम्

Surya Kavacham — The Sun asked to guard each part of the body
Author Muni Yājñavalkya Verses 7, anuṣṭubh metre

A Kavach is armour made of words. Here Yājñavalkya tells a sage how to picture the Sun with his bright crown and thousand rays, and then name him part by part over the body: Bhāskara at the head, Dinamaṇi at the eyes, Prabhākara at the shoulders. The last two verses say how to keep and recite it.

याज्ञवल्क्य उवाच — याज्ञवल्क्य बोले Yājñavalkya said

शृणुष्व मुनिशार्दूल सूर्यस्य कवचं शुभम् ।
शरीरारोग्यदं दिव्यं सर्वसौभाग्यदायकम् ॥ १॥

śṛṇuṣva muniśārdūla sūryasya kavacaṃ śubham |
śarīrārogyadaṃ divyaṃ sarvasaubhāgyadāyakam ||

सुनो, मुनियों में शेर जैसे श्रेष्ठ, सूर्य के कवच को। यह शुभ और दिव्य है। यह शरीर को आरोग्य देता है और हर तरह का सौभाग्य देता है।

English sense

Listen, tiger among sages, to the armour of the Sun. It is auspicious and divine. It gives health to the body and gives every kind of good fortune.

हिन्दी अर्थ

हज़ार किरणों वाले का ध्यान करो, जिनके सिर पर दमकता मुकुट है और जिनके मकर के आकार के कुण्डल चमक रहे हैं। फिर इस स्तोत्र का पाठ करे।

English sense

Think of the one with the thousand rays, a blazing crown on his head and shark-shaped earrings flashing. Then recite this hymn.

May Bhāskara guard my head. May the one of boundless light guard my forehead. May the jewel of the day guard my eyes, and the lord of the day my ears.

मेरी नाक की रक्षा तपती किरणों वाले करें और मेरे मुख की रक्षा वेदों के वाहन वाले करें। मेरी जीभ की रक्षा मान देने वाले करें और मेरे कण्ठ की रक्षा देवताओं के वन्दनीय करें।

English sense

May the one of hot rays guard my nose, and the one carried by the Vedas my face. May the giver of honour guard my tongue, and the one the gods praise my throat.

May Prabhākara guard my shoulders, and the one dear to the people my chest. May the twelve-formed one guard my feet, and the lord of all my whole body.

Whoever writes this hymn, which guards by the Sun, on birch bark and holds it in his hand will have every accomplishment come under his control.

sa rogamukto dīrghāyuḥ sukhaṃ puṣṭiṃ ca vindati ||

जो अच्छी तरह नहाकर इसे ठीक से जपता है, या स्थिर मन से पढ़ता है, वह रोग से मुक्त और दीर्घायु होता है और सुख और पुष्टि पाता है।

English sense

Whoever bathes well and repeats it properly, or reads it with a steady mind, becomes free of disease and long-lived, and finds comfort and strength.
