Pratah Smarana Stotram — Three verses to remember Brahman at dawn

A morning practice in three verses. The first remembers the Self shining in the heart, the witness of waking, dream and deep sleep: I am that Brahman, not this heap of elements. The second worships what mind and speech cannot reach, which the Vedas describe only as "not this, not this". The third bows to the one in whom the whole world appears, the way a snake appears in a rope.

Verse 1

English sense

At dawn I remember the Self that shines in the heart: being, awareness and joy, the goal of the highest renunciates, the fourth state. That which always knows dream, waking and deep sleep — that partless Brahman am I, not this heap of elements.

English sense

At dawn I worship the one that mind and words cannot reach, by whose grace all speech shines. The one the Vedas spoke of with the words "not this, not this" — him they call the god of gods, unborn, unfailing, the first.

Variant reading प्रातर्भजामि मनसा वचसामगम्यं ("with the mind I worship the one words cannot reach"), as many chant it.

English sense

At dawn I bow to the one beyond darkness, bright as the sun: full, the eternal state, called the Highest Person. In that boundless form this whole world appears, just as a snake appears in a rope.
