Kashi Panchakam — Five verses that find Kāśī inside

The first three verses end on the same line: sā kāśikāhaṃ nijabodharūpā, "I am that Kāśī, whose form is my own knowing". The city on the Gaṅgā, with its Maṇikarṇikā ghat and its Shiva as lord of the world, is read as the inner life of one who has seen the Self, and the pilgrimage ends where it begins.

Verse 1

English sense

The body is the holy field of Kashi. The all-pervading knowing, mother of the three worlds, is the Ganga. Devotion and faith are Gaya. Meditation on the feet of one's own guru is Prayaga. This lord of the world, the fourth state, the witness of every mind, the inner Self: if all this lives in my body, what other holy place is there?
