गुरुपादुकास्तोत्रम्

Guru Paduka Stotram — Nine verses of homage to the guru's sandals

In India the guru's sandals stand for the guru's feet, and the feet for the guru's grace. Each verse here names a gift the sandals bring: a boat across the endless ocean of rebirth, the six qualities that begin with calm, a light against the darkness of sin, a cure for the poison of desire. Each ends in the same bow, namo namaḥ śrī-gurupādukābhyām. The hymn is widely sung on Guru days, and many sing it for Vairagya and Viveka, which it names among the gifts.

English sense

Honoured by lotus-like feet; they take away every kind of confusion; they give all they wish for to the people who bow to them. I bow again and again to the sandals of the guru.

Variant reading In the author's printed collection the second line reads नारीविमोहादिनिवारकाभ्याम् (removing the confusion that comes from women and the like). The reading given here, नानाविमोहादि… (every kind of confusion), is the one in general use. Some printings also read पदाहृताभ्याम् in the first line (drawn by lotus-like feet).
