A kavaca is a spoken armour. This one is short: it names the river goddess in her different streams, Mandākinī in heaven, Alakanandā on earth and Bhogavatī below, and asks each to stand guard. The closing verses give its fruit. See also Kavach.

You are sprung from Viṣṇu's foot and bear the name Vaiṣṇavī; protect me. May Gaṅgā, who flows on three paths, guard me on every side.

By the mere remembrance of Gaṅgā a man becomes sinless; one who recites it inside his house obtains the fruit of bathing in Gaṅgā.

One who recites it at the time of bathing obtains a hundred crore times that fruit; one who recites it self-controlled and with devotion is freed together with a crore of his family.
