चन्द्रकवचम्

Chandra Kavacham — The Moon asked to guard each part of the body
Verses 7, anuṣṭubh metre

A Kavach is armour made of words. After one verse to picture the Moon, each line hands one part of the body to him under one of his names: the lord of night, the friend of the water-lily, the deer-marked, the ocean-born. The last verse says that whoever reads it or only hears it is victorious everywhere.

समं चतुर्भुजं वन्दे केयूरमुकुटोज्ज्वलम् ।
वासुदेवस्य नयनं शङ्करस्य च भूषणम् ॥ १॥

vāsudevasya nayanaṃ śaṅkarasya ca bhūṣaṇam ||

मैं उन सुडौल चार भुजाओं वाले को प्रणाम करता हूँ, जो बाजूबन्द और मुकुट से दमक रहे हैं। वे वासुदेव की आँख हैं और शंकर का आभूषण हैं।

English sense

I bow to the evenly formed, four-armed one, bright with armlets and a crown. He is the eye of Vāsudeva and the ornament of Śaṅkara.

इस प्रकार ध्यान करके चन्द्रमा के शुभ कवच का रोज़ जप करे। मेरे सिर की रक्षा शशि करें और मेरे माथे की रक्षा कलाओं के भण्डार करें।

English sense

Having meditated like this, recite the auspicious armour of the Moon every day. May the hare-marked one guard the region of my head, and the treasury of the arts my brow.

May Candra guard my two eyes, and the lord of the night my two ears. May the maker of the night guard my nose, and the friend of the water-lily my mouth.

May the lord of the stars guard my thighs, and the deer-marked one my knees always. May the one born of the ocean guard my shins, and may Vidhu always guard my feet.

यः पठेच्छृणुयाद्वापि सर्वत्र विजयी भवेत् ॥ ७॥

sarvāṇyanyāni cāṅgāni pātu candvo'khilaṃ vapuḥ |
etaddhi kavacaṃ divyaṃ bhuktimuktipradāyakam |
yaḥ paṭhecchṛṇuyādvāpi sarvatra vijayī bhavet ||

English sense

May Candra guard all my other limbs, the whole body. This armour is divine and gives both enjoyment and freedom. Whoever reads it or even hears it will win everywhere.
