Ananda Lahari — Twenty verses of wonder at the Goddess

The first verse admits that Brahmā, Shiva, Skanda and the thousand-headed serpent all fall short of praising her, so what can anyone else do? The verses that follow try all the same: a picture of Parvati with betel, kohl and pearls, her husband Shiva in his cremation-ground splendour, and a plain request for her kindness. It is not the same text as the first forty-one verses of the Saundarya Laharī, though some people use the name for both.

Verse 1

English sense

Bhavānī, Brahmā cannot praise you even with his four mouths, nor Shiva, the destroyer of Tripura, with his five, nor the six-faced commander of the gods, nor the king of serpents with his thousand mouths. Then tell me, how can there be any chance for others here?

English sense

The sweetness of ghee, milk, grapes and honey cannot be told in any words; it is only something for the tongue to taste. In the same way your beauty is something only the eye of the supreme Shiva can take in. How can we speak of it, you whose qualities lie beyond all the Vedas?

English sense

Her breast shines with a garland of mandāra flowers, her earrings gleam as she listens to the sound of the vīṇā, her body is graceful, she is Mātaṅgī, charming in every movement. She is the glorious one, Shambhu's wife, whose restless eyes are like lotuses. May she be victorious.

English sense

Born of the Himalaya, she is a creeper of knowing and bliss: soft hands are her sprouts, pearls her flowers, the mass of her hair the bees. She has made Sthāṇu her support, bends under the fruit of her breasts, and is sweet with good words. She destroys sickness and shines.

English sense

Iron that touches the touchstone at once takes the state of gold, and the water of the street becomes pure when it joins the flood of the Gaṅgā. In the same way, if my mind, very dirty with this sin and that, clings to you in love, how would it not become spotless?

English sense

There is no rule that the fruit of a wish must come from anyone but you, and you are able to give even more than is wished. So the ancients, Brahmā and the others, say, and they set their minds on you. Make my mind cling to you night and day, Īśānī. That is only fitting.
