Chapter Nine·The Sleeping Women·Verses 1–73
In the middle of Rāvaṇa's grounds Hanumān finds his great house, half a yojana wide and a yojana long, guarded by elephants and filled with his wives and with princesses he has carried off. The splendour of Kubera, Indra, Yama and Varuṇa is all here. He sees the aerial chariot Puṣpaka, which Viśvakarmā made for Brahmā, which Kubera won by austerity and Rāvaṇa took from him by force, and he climbs onto it. A heavenly smell of food and drink draws him to a vast hall, rich with gems, pillars, carpets and incense, which pleases every sense. There, after midnight, a thousand women lie asleep after drinking and play, their ornaments and garlands in disarray, their faces like closed lotuses, their bodies twined together like creepers in spring. Hanumān notes that none of them was taken by force or loved another, except Sītā. He wishes Sītā were Rāvaṇa's in the same way, and grieves that the lord of Laṅkā has done her so base a wrong.

While Rāvaṇa slept at ease, the burning golden lamps seemed to watch those women of many kinds of beauty without blinking.

None of the women there had been won by force. That mighty one had won them by his merits. None loved another man, and none had belonged to another before, except for Janaka's daughter, who is worthy of the best.
Explanation

The good-minded lord of monkeys thought, “If Rāghava's lawful wife were like these wives of the rākṣasa king, it would be a good thing for him.”
Explanation
“Him” is Rāvaṇa: had Sītā been his by right, as these women are, all would be well for him.
