Chapter Eighteen·Rāvaṇa Comes to the Grove·Verses 1–32
Before dawn, as Hanumān keeps watch from the śiṃśupā tree, he hears brahmin rākṣasas reciting the Vedas. Rāvaṇa wakes to auspicious music, his mind full of Vaidehī, and he cannot hide his desire. Richly adorned, he enters the Aśoka grove with its trees, ponds, birds and golden gateways. About a hundred women follow him with golden lamps, whisks, fans, water jugs, swords, a seat, a jewelled bowl of drink and a white parasol. His wives come behind, still heavy with sleep and wine. Hanumān hears their girdles and anklets and sees Rāvaṇa reach the gate, glowing, drunk and proud, like the god of love with his bow laid aside. Hanumān slips lower in the tree to see him, but is overpowered by his glory and stays hidden among the leaves. Rāvaṇa comes near, wanting to see Sītā.

So Hanumān looked over the grove with its flowering trees and searched for Vaidehī. Meanwhile only a little of the night was left.
Explanation
