Skanda Purāṇa
The largest of the Purāṇas, told by Sūta to the sages — the greatness of Śiva and his son Skanda, and of the holy places of India. We begin with the Kāśī Khaṇḍa: how the Vindhya mountain was humbled and Agastya left Kāśī, the worlds that a soul passes through, and the praise of Vārāṇasī — its liṅgas, its Gaṅgā, its ghāṭs and its gods — as the city where death itself brings freedom. Our own translation, verse by verse.

Kāśī Khaṇḍa, First Half काशीखण्ड — पूर्वार्ध
Nārada's visit swells the pride of the Vindhya, which grows to block the sun; at the gods' request Agastya leaves Kāśī, bows the mountain down and goes south. On his way, and in talk with Skanda, the worlds of the gods, the planets, the stars and Dhruva are described, with Śivaśarman's journey through them; then the greatness of Kāśī, Maṇikarṇikā, the Gaṅgā and her thousand names, Daṇḍapāṇi, Jñānavāpī, right conduct, the house-holder's and the yogin's way, King Divodāsa, and the Sun in his many forms in Kāśī. नारद के आने से विन्ध्य का अभिमान बढ़ता है और वह सूर्य का मार्ग रोक देता है; देवताओं के कहने पर अगस्त्य काशी छोड़ते हैं, पर्वत को झुकाते हैं और दक्षिण जाते हैं। मार्ग में और स्कन्द से बातचीत में देवताओं, ग्रहों, नक्षत्रों और ध्रुव के लोकों का वर्णन है, शिवशर्मा की उन लोकों से यात्रा के साथ; फिर काशी, मणिकर्णिका, गंगा और उनके सहस्र नाम, दण्डपाणि, ज्ञानवापी, सदाचार, गृहस्थ और योगी का मार्ग, राजा दिवोदास, और काशी में सूर्य के अनेक रूप।
