Chapter Three·The Slaying of Mahiṣāsura·Verses 1–44
With his army gone, Mahiṣāsura's generals come against the Goddess one by one. Cikṣura's arrows, bow and sword break on her, Cāmara's spear falls to her cry of “huṃ”, and her lion leaps onto his elephant and kills him. She cuts down the rest of the named demons with mace, sling, arrows, trident and sword. Then Mahiṣāsura himself fights as a buffalo, scattering her troops, splitting the earth and hurling mountains with his horns. She binds him with her noose, and he slips from form to form: lion, man with a sword, elephant, and buffalo again. The Goddess drinks and laughs, tells him to roar while he still can, leaps onto him, pins him with her foot and strikes him with her trident. As he tries to come out of his own mouth in a new form, she holds him half-emerged and cuts off his head. The demon army perishes, and the gods, sages, Gandharvas and Apsarases praise her with song and dance.

Om. I bow to the Goddess seated on a lotus. She is bright as a thousand rising suns and wears red silk and a garland of heads. Her breasts are smeared with red. In her lotus hands she holds a rosary and the book of knowledge, and shows the gestures of fearlessness and of granting boons. Her lotus face shines with three eyes, and her jewelled crown is bound with the moon.
Explanation
Vidyā, “knowledge”, is taken here as a book held in the hand. It is also read as a gesture of teaching.
