Chapter Eleven·The Hymn to Nārāyaṇī·Verses 1–55
With Śumbha dead, the gods led by Agni praise the Goddess as Kātyāyanī. They call her the ground of the world, the power of Viṣṇu, the seed of everything and the illusion that binds and frees. Then comes the long refrain "Nārāyaṇī, we bow to you": she is praised as intelligence in every heart, as time, as all that is auspicious, and in the forms of the seven Mothers who fought beside her. Her fierce forms, her trident, bell and sword are asked to guard the world. Pleased, she offers a boon. The gods ask that she always end the world's troubles and destroy their enemies. She agrees and foretells her future births: as Vindhyavāsinī, as the red-toothed one, as Śatākṣī and Śākambharī in a long drought, as Durgā who kills the demon Durgama, as Bhīmā and as Bhrāmarī. Whenever trouble comes from demons, she says, she will come down and destroy the enemy.

Who but you is spoken of in the branches of knowledge, in the teachings that are lamps of discernment, and in the first words, the Vedas? And who but you makes this world wander so far in the deep, dark pit of "mine"?
