Chapter 30·The Goddess's Boon to Rāma·Verses 1–63
As Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa fall silent, Nārada comes down from the sky playing his great vīṇā and singing the Bṛhadratha chant. Rāma honours him with a seat, water and worship, and Nārada asks why he grieves like an ordinary man. He knows Rāvaṇa has taken Sītā, deluded, not knowing it will be his death; Rāma was born to kill Rāvaṇa and this is why Sītā was taken. In a past life Sītā was a sage's daughter doing austerities; Rāvaṇa asked her to be his wife and, refused, seized her hair; she cursed him that she would be born, not from a womb, for his ruin, and gave up her defiled body. She is born of a portion of Ramā, and Rāvaṇa took her as one might take a snake for a garland, to his family's ruin. Rāma, born of Hari's portion in Aja's line at the gods' request, should take heart: Sītā, faithful, thinks of him day and night, and Indra has sent her the milk of the wish-cow, so she feels no hunger or thirst. Nārada tells him to keep the Navarātra vow now in Āśvina: fasting, worship, mantra repetition, fire-offerings and the offering of pure animals; Viṣṇu, Śiva, Brahmā, Indra, Viśvāmitra, Bhṛgu, Vasiṣṭha, Kaśyapa and Bṛhaspati, whose wife was taken, have kept it; Indra kept it to kill Vṛtra, Śiva to destroy Tripura, Hari to kill Madhu on Meru. Rāma asks who the Goddess is. Nārada says she is the eternal first Śakti, giver of every wish and remover of sorrow, the cause of all beings and of Brahmā and the rest, without whose power nothing can stir; she is the creating power of Brahmā, the keeping power of Viṣṇu and the destroying power of Rudra, and the supreme power beyond; before any god or world existed she, without qualities, played with the supreme Person, then took on qualities and made the three worlds, first creating Brahmā and the others and giving them their powers. Knowing her frees one from the bond of birth; she is the highest knowledge, source and maker of the Vedas; her names are countless, formed from all the letters from a to kṣa. Rāma asks for the rite; Nārada tells him to set up a seat on level ground, install the Goddess and fast nine days, and he will be the officiant. Rāma does so on the mountain in Āśvina, with fire-rite, offering and worship. At midnight on the eighth the Goddess appears on a lion on the peak and, pleased, speaks in a voice like thunder: she is pleased with his vow; he is born of Nārāyaṇa's portion to kill Rāvaṇa; she recalls his forms as fish, tortoise, boar, man-lion, dwarf and Jamadagni's son; the monkeys are portions of the gods, strong with her power, and Lakṣmaṇa, Śeṣa's portion, will kill Rāvaṇa's son; he should worship her in spring too, kill Rāvaṇa, rule eleven thousand years and return to heaven. She vanishes; Rāma finishes the vow, worships Vijayā on the tenth, gives gifts and sets out; with Sugrīva's army he reaches the shore, bridges the sea and kills Rāvaṇa. Whoever hears this story of the Goddess with devotion enjoys much and reaches the highest state; there are many other Purāṇas, but none equals this Bhāgavata.
