The Purāṇa of the Goddess, told by Sūta to the sages of the Naimiṣa forest as Vyāsa told it to King Janamejaya — the Goddess as the one power behind Brahmā, Viṣṇu and Śiva, her battles with Mahiṣa, Śumbha and Niśumbha, the royal lines and the old stories retold in her light, the shape of the world, her many forms, the Devī Gītā, daily worship and the Gāyatrī. प्रथमः स्कन्धः
First Skandha प्रथम स्कन्ध
The sages at Naimiṣa ask Sūta for the Purāṇa of the Goddess; its plan and the eighteen Purāṇas; Viṣṇu's head cut off and restored as Hayagrīva; Madhu and Kaiṭabha slain through the Goddess's help; Budha, Sudyumna who became Ilā, Purūravas and Urvaśī; Śuka's birth, his visit to King Janaka and his release; and Satyavatī's marriage to Śantanu. नैमिष के ऋषि सूत से देवी का पुराण सुनाने को कहते हैं; पुराण की रूपरेखा और अठारह पुराण; विष्णु का सिर कटना और हयग्रीव रूप में जुड़ना; देवी की सहायता से मधु-कैटभ का वध; बुध, इला बने सुद्युम्न, पुरूरवा और उर्वशी; शुक का जन्म, राजा जनक के पास जाना और उनकी मुक्ति; और सत्यवती का शन्तनु से विवाह।

The birth of Satyavatī and of Vyāsa; Gaṅgā, Śantanu and Bhīṣma; Kuntī, Karṇa and the Pāṇḍavas; the end of the Kurus and the Yādavas; Parīkṣit's death by the serpent, Janamejaya's snake sacrifice, and Āstīka who stopped it. सत्यवती और व्यास का जन्म; गंगा, शन्तनु और भीष्म; कुन्ती, कर्ण और पाण्डव; कौरवों और यादवों का अन्त; सर्प से परीक्षित् की मृत्यु, जनमेजय का सर्प-यज्ञ और उसे रोकने वाले आस्तीक।

Third Skandha तृतीय स्कन्ध
Janamejaya asks how the world began; Brahmā, Viṣṇu and Śiva see the Goddess on the jewelled island and praise her; the tattvas and the three guṇas; the power of her seed-syllable in the tale of Satyavrata; the three kinds of sacrifice; Sudarśana and Śaśikalā; the Navarātra vow and Rāma's worship of the Goddess. जनमेजय सृष्टि के आरम्भ के बारे में पूछते हैं; ब्रह्मा, विष्णु और शिव मणिद्वीप में देवी का दर्शन और स्तुति करते हैं; तत्त्व और तीन गुण; सत्यव्रत की कथा में देवी के बीज-मन्त्र की महिमा; तीन प्रकार के यज्ञ; सुदर्शन और शशिकला; नवरात्र-व्रत और राम द्वारा देवी की पूजा।

Why Vasudeva and Devakī suffered: the power of karma and of māyā; Nara and Nārāyaṇa and the birth of Urvaśī; Bhṛgu's curse on Viṣṇu; Śukra and Bṛhaspati among the demons; the descents of Viṣṇu; the earth's burden and the birth of Kṛṣṇa, told as the Goddess's work. वसुदेव और देवकी ने दुःख क्यों पाया: कर्म और माया की शक्ति; नर-नारायण और उर्वशी का जन्म; भृगु का विष्णु को शाप; दैत्यों के बीच शुक्र और बृहस्पति; विष्णु के अवतार; पृथ्वी का भार और कृष्ण का जन्म, देवी की लीला के रूप में।
पञ्चमः स्कन्धः
Fifth Skandha पञ्चम स्कन्ध
The Goddess above the three gods; Mahiṣa's rise and the Goddess born from the gods' radiance; the slaying of Mahiṣa and his generals; Śumbha and Niśumbha, Dhūmralocana, Caṇḍa and Muṇḍa, Raktabīja, all slain; and King Suratha and the merchant Samādhi, who worship her. तीनों देवों से ऊपर देवी; महिषासुर का उदय और देवताओं के तेज से देवी का प्रकट होना; महिष और उसके सेनापतियों का वध; शुम्भ-निशुम्भ, धूम्रलोचन, चण्ड-मुण्ड और रक्तबीज का वध; और राजा सुरथ और वैश्य समाधि द्वारा देवी की आराधना।
