Chapter One · Brāhmaṇa 1: The Full · Verses 1

The supplementary part of the Upaniṣad opens with the verse on fullness: that is full, this is full, and when the full is taken from the full, the full remains. Brahman is then called space, the ancient space, the space that holds the wind, and Om is named as the Veda through which one knows what is to be known.

That is full. This is full. The full comes out of the full. Take the full from the full, and the full still remains. "Om. Brahman is space. It is the ancient space, the space that holds the wind." So the son of Kauravyāyaṇī used to say. The brāhmaṇas know this Om as the Veda, for by it one knows what is to be known.

Explanation

"That" and "this" are read in different ways. Some take "that" as Brahman beyond sight and "this" as the same Brahman seen in the world, so nothing is lost when one is drawn from the other. Others take "that" as the cause and "this" as the effect, both whole. The same verse is also recited on its own as a peace chant. "Space" is read by some as the plain sky used as a symbol for Brahman, and by others as Brahman itself, called space because it is everywhere.
