I taught this imperishable yoga to Vivasvān, the Sun. Vivasvān told it to Manu, and Manu told it to Ikṣvāku.
4.2
Handed down in this way from one to the next, it was known to the royal sages. But over a long time, scorcher of foes, that yoga was lost here.
4.3
That same ancient yoga is what I have taught you today, since you are my devotee and my friend, and this is the highest secret.
4.4
Your birth was later and Vivasvān's birth was earlier. How am I to understand that you taught it in the beginning?
4.5
Many births of mine have passed, Arjuna, and of yours too. I know them all; you do not know them, scorcher of foes.
4.6
Though I am unborn and imperishable, and Lord of all beings, I take charge of my own nature and come into being by my own power.
4.7
Whenever dharma declines, Bhārata, and adharma rises, then I bring myself forth.
4.8
To protect the good, to destroy wrongdoers, and to establish dharma firmly, I come into being age after age.
4.9
One who truly knows my birth and action to be divine in this way does not go to rebirth when he leaves the body. He comes to me, Arjuna.
What is action and what is inaction? Even the wise are confused about this. I will explain action to you, and knowing it you will be freed from evil.
4.17
The truth of action must be understood, the truth of wrong action must be understood, and the truth of inaction must be understood. The way of action is hard to fathom.
4.18
Whoever sees that doing can be a kind of not-doing, and not-doing a kind of doing, is wise among people; even while doing all his work, he stays steady in yoga.
Free from craving, with mind and body controlled, having given up all possessions, doing only what the body needs, he incurs no fault.
4.22
Content with whatever comes by itself, beyond the pairs of opposites, free from envy and even-minded in success and failure, he is not bound even when he acts.
For one who is free from attachment and freed, whose mind is fixed in knowledge, and who acts for the sake of sacrifice, the whole of his action melts away.
The offering is Brahman. The oblation is Brahman. It is poured by Brahman into the fire that is Brahman. Brahman alone is reached by one who sees Brahman in every action.
Certain yogīs make offerings to the gods alone, while others give the very act of offering into Brahman, the sacred flame, as their offering.
4.26
Some offer hearing and the other senses to self-control, as into a fire; others offer sound and the other things the senses take in to the senses, as into a fire.
4.27
Others offer all the workings of the senses and of the breath into the fire of the yoga of self-restraint, lit by knowledge.
4.28
Some make their sacrifice with wealth, some with austerity, some with yoga. Likewise others, striving and of strict vows, make their sacrifice with study and knowledge.
Others pour the breath that comes in into the breath that goes out, and the breath that goes out into the breath that comes in; devoted to mastering the breath, they hold its flow still.
Those who eat the nectar left over from sacrifice go to the eternal Brahman. Best of the Kurus, this world is not for one who does not sacrifice; how then the other?
Learn it by bowing down, by questioning and by service. The wise who have seen the truth will teach you that knowledge.
Knowing it, son of Pāṇḍu, you will not fall into delusion like this again. By it you will see all beings without exception in yourself, and then in me.
Therefore, Bhārata, with the sword of knowledge cut this doubt of yours, born of ignorance and lodged in the heart. Take your stand in yoga, and stand up.
