One who gives up an action only because it is painful, from fear of bodily trouble, makes a rājasa relinquishment. He does not gain the fruit of relinquishment at all.
18.9
O Arjuna, when a prescribed action is done only because it must be done, giving up attachment and also the fruit, that relinquishment is held to be sāttvika.
18.10
The man of relinquishment, filled with sattva, wise, with his doubts cut away, does not hate unpleasant work and does not cling to pleasant work.
18.11
For one who has a body cannot give up action completely. But one who gives up the fruit of action is called a man of relinquishment.
18.12
The fruit of action is of three kinds: unwanted, wanted and mixed. It comes after death to those who have not relinquished, but never to those who have renounced.
18.13
O mighty-armed one, learn from me these five causes for the accomplishment of all actions, stated in the Sāṅkhya that settles the matter.
18.14
They are the seat, the doer, the instruments of many sorts, the various distinct efforts, and the unseen power as the fifth.
18.15
Whatever action a person begins with body, speech or mind, right or its opposite, these five are its causes.
18.16
This being so, one who, because his understanding is untrained, sees the pure Self alone as the doer, that man of poor understanding does not see.
18.17
One who has no feeling of "I am doing", whose understanding is not stained, even if he kills these people, does not kill and is not bound.
O Dhanañjaya, hear now the threefold division of the intellect and of steadiness by the guṇas, told fully and one by one.
18.30
O son of Pṛthā, the intellect that knows the path of action and the path of withdrawal, what should and should not be done, what is to be feared and what is not, bondage and freedom, is sāttvika.
18.31
O son of Pṛthā, the intellect by which one understands dharma and adharma, and what should and should not be done, wrongly, is rājasa.
But the steadiness by which one holds on to dharma, pleasure and wealth, O Arjuna, with strong attachment and wanting the fruit, is rājasa, O son of Pṛthā.
O son of Pṛthā, the steadiness by which a dull-minded man does not let go of sleep, fear, grief, dejection and arrogance is tāmasa.
18.36
And now hear from me, O bull among the Bharatas, the three kinds of happiness. There is a happiness in which one comes to delight through practice, and in which one reaches the end of sorrow.
Calm, self-restraint, austerity, purity, forbearance, straightforwardness, knowledge, realized wisdom and faith are the work of a brāhmaṇa, born of his nature.
Farming, cattle-keeping and trade are the work of a vaiśya, born of his nature. Work of the nature of service is likewise the work of a śūdra, born of his nature.
One's own duty, even imperfect, is better than another's duty well done. Doing the work fixed by one's own nature, one incurs no sin.
18.48
O son of Kuntī, one should not give up the work one is born to, even with its faults. For all undertakings are covered by some fault, as fire is by smoke.
One whose mind is unattached everywhere, who is self-mastered and free of longing, attains through renunciation the supreme perfection of actionlessness.
18.50
O son of Kuntī, learn from me briefly how one who has attained perfection reaches Brahman, which is the highest culmination of knowledge.
18.51
A person endowed with an intellect made pure controls himself by steadiness, gives up sound and the other sense objects, and casts off liking and dislike.
Go to Him alone for refuge with all your being, O Bhārata. By His grace you will attain supreme peace and the eternal abode.
18.63
Thus I have told you knowledge more secret than the secret. Reflect on it fully, and then do as you wish.
18.64
Hear once more My supreme word, the most secret of all. You are very dear to Me, so I will speak for your good.
18.65
Fix your mind on Me, be devoted to Me, worship Me, bow to Me. You will come to Me alone. I truly promise you this, for you are dear to Me.
Giving up all dharmas, come to Me alone for refuge. I will set you free from all sins. Do not grieve.
18.67
You should never speak this to one without austerity, nor to one without devotion, nor to one who does not wish to hear, nor to one who finds fault with Me.
Where Kṛṣṇa, the Lord of yoga, is, and where the son of Pṛthā, the archer, is, there are fortune, victory, well-being and firm, sound policy. This is my conviction.
