Of these, sattva, being pure, is illuminating and free of affliction. It binds by attachment to happiness and by attachment to knowledge, O sinless one.
Know that rajas is of the nature of passion, the source of craving and attachment. It binds the embodied one by attachment to action, O son of Kuntī.

वह दुःख-सुख में सम है, अपने स्वरूप में स्थित है, मिट्टी, पत्थर और सोने को समान मानता है। वह प्रिय और अप्रिय में समान है, धीर है, और अपनी निन्दा और स्तुति में समान है;
He is even in pain and pleasure, rests in himself, and holds a clod, a stone and gold as the same. He is alike to the pleasant and the unpleasant, steady, and alike in blame and praise of himself.
