O Kṛṣṇa, you praise giving up actions, and then again you praise yoga, doing them. Of these two, tell me clearly and for certain the one that is better.
5.2
Renunciation and the yoga of action both lead to the highest good. But of the two, the yoga of action is better than giving up action.
5.3
Know him as a lasting renouncer who neither hates nor craves. For one free from the pairs of opposites, O mighty-armed one, is easily set free from bondage.
5.4
The childish, not the wise, speak of Sāṅkhya and Yoga as separate. One who stands fully in even one of them gains the fruit of both.
5.5
The state that the followers of knowledge reach is reached by the followers of yoga too. Whoever sees Sāṅkhya and Yoga as one truly sees.
5.6
But renunciation, O mighty-armed one, is hard to attain without yoga. The sage joined in yoga reaches Brahman before long.
5.7
Joined in yoga, pure in mind, master of the body and of the senses, whose self has become the self of all beings: such a person is not stained even while acting.
5.8
The one in yoga who knows the truth should think, "I do nothing at all," while seeing, hearing, touching, smelling, eating, walking, sleeping and breathing.
5.9
He thinks so too while speaking, letting go, taking, and opening and closing the eyes, holding firmly that it is only the senses moving among their objects.
5.10
Whoever acts placing all actions in Brahman and giving up attachment is not stained by sin, just as a lotus leaf is not wet by water.
Giving up all actions with the mind, the self-controlled embodied one rests happily in the city of nine gates, neither doing anything nor causing anything to be done.
5.14
The Lord does not create doership for the world, nor actions, nor the link between action and its fruit. It is nature that is at work.
5.15
The all-pervading Lord takes on no one's sin, nor anyone's merit. Knowledge is covered by ignorance, and by that living beings are deluded.
But for those whose ignorance is destroyed by knowledge of the Self, that knowledge lights up the highest, like the sun.
5.17
Those whose intellect is set on That, whose mind is in That, who are rooted in That and hold That as the goal, their stains washed away by knowledge, go where there is no return.
5.18
The wise see the same in a brāhmaṇa rich in learning and humility, in a cow, an elephant, a dog and an outcaste.
5.19
Those whose mind is fixed in sameness have conquered birth here itself. For Brahman is flawless and the same in all, and so they abide in Brahman.
5.20
He does not rejoice on gaining the pleasant, nor is he troubled on meeting the unpleasant. Steady in understanding and free from delusion, the knower of Brahman is established in Brahman.
5.21
One whose mind is not attached to outer contacts finds the joy that is in the Self. Joined to Brahman in yoga, he enjoys unending joy.
5.22
For the pleasures born of sense contact are only sources of sorrow. They have a beginning and an end, O son of Kuntī, and the wise man does not delight in them.
5.23
The man who, here in this life before the body falls, can bear the rush that rises from desire and anger, is in yoga. He is happy.
5.24
The yogi whose joy is within, whose delight is within, and whose light is within alone, becomes Brahman and reaches the peace of Brahman.
The seers whose sins are worn away, whose doubts are cut away, who are self-controlled and engaged in the good of all beings, gain the peace of Brahman.
For the ascetics who are free from desire and anger, whose mind is controlled and who have known the Self, the peace of Brahman is present on every side.
