Śaiva stotra · ascribed to Rāvaṇa

शिवताण्डवस्तोत्रम्

Shiva Tandava Stotram — The fierce dance of Śiva, as sung by the ten-headed devotee

The long compound words are made to sound like the dance itself, with the drum beating ḍamaḍ ḍamaḍ and the forehead fire blazing dhagad dhagad. Tradition ascribes the hymn to Rāvaṇa. It pictures Shiva piece by piece, the river in his hair, the fire on his brow, the snakes and the moon, and ends with a wish to worship him one day with a mind that is even toward everything.

English sense

On ground made holy by the water streaming down from the forest of his matted hair, with a long, high garland of snakes hanging from his neck, while his drum sounds ḍamaḍ ḍamaḍ ḍamaḍ ḍamaḍ, Śiva danced the fierce tāṇḍava. May he bring us good.

English sense

A person who reads, remembers or speaks this best of hymns, told in this way, always becomes pure. He quickly gains deep devotion to Hara, the teacher, and there is no other way. Thinking on good Śaṅkara takes away the confusion of embodied beings.
