Narmadashtakam — Eight verses to the river that takes away fear

Every verse closes with the same line: tvadīyapādapaṅkajaṃ namāmi devi narmade, I bow to your lotus feet, goddess Narmadā. In between, the river is seen as a flood that washes the earth, a home for fish and tortoises, a refuge for Mārkaṇḍeya and the sages, and a bank where hunter, bard, scholar and fool are all alike.

English sense

Your waves slip and tumble in drops of spray, and their breaking colours the sight of you. Your water is set against hostile sins and all that is born of them. You are the armour that takes away the fear of Yama's messengers, of Death and of ghosts. I bow to your lotus feet, goddess Narmadā.

Variant reading Two texts read पापजातजातकादिवारिसंयुतम् (with water that meets sins and the like) for ...जातकारि...; the second line is translated tentatively.
