Kaupina Panchakam — Five verses on the monk who owns nothing but a loincloth

Each verse lists what the monk has given up and what he has instead, and then says the same thing: those who wear only a loincloth are truly fortunate. No house, no bowl, no wealth; the foot of a tree, two hands, the words of Vedānta, and a mind at rest in the Self.

Verse 1

vedāntavākyeṣu sadā ramanto
bhikṣānnamātreṇa ca tuṣṭimantaḥ |
aśokavantaḥ karuṇaikavantaḥ

English sense

They always delight in the words of the Vedānta, they are content with a little food got by begging, they are free from sorrow, and kindness is their one wealth. Those who wear only a loincloth are truly fortunate.

Variant reading विशोकवन्तः for अशोकवन्तः; and the third line विशोकमन्तःकरणे चरन्तः (also रमन्तः) in other printings.

English sense

They take only the foot of a tree for shelter, they make their two hands their bowl for eating, and they treat even wealth with scorn, as if it were a patched rag. Those who wear only a loincloth are truly fortunate.
