Jai Sagun Nirgun Roop — The Vedas' praise of Rāma at his court

After the coronation each group has praised Rāma in turn: the gods, then the Vedas. They come to the court dressed as bards, and speak straight to him. They call him both with form and without it, and praise his feet, which freed a sage's wife and which gave the Ganges. They picture the world as a tree and bow to it. They end with the one request that everything else leads to, love for his feet, free of faults of mind, speech and deed.

English sense

Victory to you, who have form and are beyond form, whose beauty has no equal, crown-jewel of kings. By the strength of your arms you killed the fierce, mighty and wicked, the ten-headed and the rest. You took birth as a man, broke the burden of the world and burned up its cruel sorrows. Victory, kind Lord, protector of those who bow to you. We bow to you together with your Śakti.

English sense

Under your hard-to-cross māyā, gods and demons, serpents, men, and all things that move and do not move are carried away. On the road of worldly life they wander for endless days and nights, loaded with time, action and the qualities. Those you looked on with kindness are freed from the three kinds of pain. You are skilled at cutting away the weariness of rebirth. Protect us, Rāma. We bow to you.

English sense

Some were drunk on pride in their knowledge and did not honour your devotion, which ends rebirth. Even after reaching a place the gods find hard to win, we see them fall, Hari. Others trusted you, gave up all other hope and became your servants. Repeating your name, they cross the ocean of rebirth without effort. Lord, we remember you.

English sense

Your feet, whose pure dust Śiva and Brahmā honour, and whose touch freed the sage's wife. From their nails came the heavenly river, honoured by sages, which makes the three worlds pure. They carry the marks of banner, thunderbolt, goad and lotus. They walked the forest, and how did they bear its thorns? Mukunda, Rāma, lord of Ramā, we always worship that pair of lotus feet.

English sense

The tree of the world has the unmanifest for its root and has no beginning. Its bark, say the Vedas and Āgamas, is four. It has six trunks and twenty-five branches, with many leaves and thick flowers. It bears two kinds of fruit, bitter and sweet, and a single creeper rests on it. It is always putting out new leaves and flowers. We bow to that tree of the world.

English sense

Some meditate on Brahman, unborn, without a second, known by experience, beyond the mind. Let them say and know what they like, Lord. We will always sing of your fame as the One with form. Home of kindness, Lord, mine of virtues, God, this is the boon we ask: leaving the faults of mind, speech and deed, may we love your feet.
