Jai Jai Suranayak Jan Sukhdayak — Brahmā and the gods pray to Viṣṇu to be born on earth

Earth has taken the form of a cow and gone weeping to the gods, and the gods have no answer. Brahmā asks where the Lord is to be found, and Śiva says that he is wherever love calls him. Then Brahmā stands with folded hands and speaks for everyone: victory to the friend of cows and brahmins, to the one whose deeds no one knows. A voice from the sky answers, and the birth of Rāma is on its way.

English sense

Victory, victory to the Lord of the gods, who gives joy to his people and protects those who bow to him! Friend of cows and brahmins, enemy of demons, beloved of the ocean's daughter. No one knows the secret of how you guard the gods and the earth, or of your wonderful deeds. May the one who is kind by nature and a friend of the poor show us his favour.

English sense

Victory, victory to the undying one, who lives in every heart, all-pervading, supreme bliss. Beyond understanding, beyond the senses, whose deeds make pure, free of māyā, Mukunda. For his sake the sages, free of delusion, give up the world and love him deeply. Day and night they meditate on him and sing his many virtues. Victory to Sat-cid-ānanda, being, knowledge and bliss.

English sense

He made creation and shaped it in three ways, with no companion or helper. May that destroyer of sin think of us, who know neither devotion nor worship. He ends the fear of worldly life, delights the minds of sages and breaks up hosts of troubles. Giving up cleverness in mind, word and deed, the whole company of gods has come to him for shelter.

English sense

Sarasvatī, the Vedas, Śeṣa and all the sages have not known him. The Vedas have called out that the poor are dear to him: may that Lord of Śrī be moved. He is the Mandara mountain for the ocean of worldly life, beautiful in every way, a house of virtues, a heap of joy. The sages, the perfected ones and all the gods, very frightened, bow at your lotus feet, Lord.
