Advaita Vedānta · Hastāmalaka, disciple of Śaṅkarācārya

हस्तामलकस्तोत्रम्

Hastamalaka Stotram — A boy's answer to "who are you?": the Self is the light behind the mind and the eye

The story is that Śaṅkara met a boy who seemed dull and asked him his name, his family and where he was going. The boy answered in twelve verses on the Self. It is not the mind or the eye, but it is what makes them work, as the sun makes everything visible without moving from place to place. Like a face in a mirror it seems to be many, and like the sun in cloud it seems to be bound; take away the mirror and the cloud and there is only the one.
