Guru Stotram — Verses of salutation to the guru: "tasmai śrīgurave namaḥ"
Verses 14, anuṣṭubh; last verse upajāti metre

Perhaps the most widely recited verses in praise of the Guru. Most lines are in the plainest metre, and almost every verse ends the same way: tasmai śrīgurave namaḥ, to that revered guru, I bow. The guru is the one who puts the salve of knowledge on eyes blinded by ignorance, who shows the reality that fills all that moves and does not move, who is Brahmā, Viṣṇu and Maheśvara, and the highest Brahman itself. The last verse, tvam eva mātā, is sung on its own in countless homes.

अखण्डमण्डलाकारं व्याप्तं येन चराचरम् ।
तत्पदं दर्शितं येन तस्मै श्रीगुरवे नमः ॥ १ ॥

tatpadaṃ darśitaṃ yena tasmai śrīgurave namaḥ ||

English sense

That which is whole, shaped like an unbroken circle, by which all that moves and does not move is filled — the one who showed me that state, to that revered guru, I bow.

English sense

I was blind with the darkness of ignorance. The one who opened my eyes with the little stick of the salve of knowledge — to that revered guru, I bow.

English sense

The guru is Brahmā, the guru is Viṣṇu, the guru is the god Maheśvara. The guru is the highest Brahman itself. To that revered guru, I bow.

That which is made of awareness and fills everything — the three worlds with all that moves and does not move. The one who showed me that state — to that revered guru, I bow.

English sense

His lotus feet shine with the crest-jewel of all the Vedas. He is the sun that opens the lotus of Vedānta. To that revered guru, I bow.

bindunādakalātītaḥ tasmai śrīgurave namaḥ ||

चैतन्यःशाश्वतःशान्तःव्योमातीतःनिरञ्जनःबिन्दुनादकलातीतःतस्मै श्रीगुरवे नमः
हिन्दी अर्थ

वे चेतना हैं, सदा रहने वाले, शान्त, आकाश से परे, निर्मल; बिन्दु, नाद और कला से भी परे। उन श्री गुरु को प्रणाम।

English sense

He is awareness, eternal, at peace, beyond space, spotless; beyond bindu, nāda and kalā. To that revered guru, I bow.

He is seated firmly in the power of knowledge, adorned with a garland of truths, and he gives both enjoyment and liberation. To that revered guru, I bow.

आत्मा का ज्ञान देकर वे कई जन्मों में इकट्ठे हुए कर्म के बन्धनों को जला देते हैं। उन श्री गुरु को प्रणाम।

By giving the knowledge of the Self, he burns away the bonds of karma gathered over many births. To that revered guru, I bow.

गुरु के चरणों का धोया हुआ जल सचमुच संसार के सागर को सुखा देता है और सार रूपी धन का ज्ञान कराता है। उन श्री गुरु को प्रणाम।

The water that has washed the guru's feet truly dries up the ocean of worldly life and makes known the wealth that is the essence. To that revered guru, I bow.

तुम ही मेरी माँ हो, तुम ही पिता। तुम ही मेरे बन्धु हो, तुम ही मित्र। तुम ही मेरी विद्या हो, तुम ही धन। हे देवों के देव, तुम ही मेरा सब कुछ हो।

English sense

You alone are my mother, and you alone my father. You alone are my kin, and you alone my friend. You alone are my learning, you alone my wealth. You alone are my everything, O god of gods.
